The Bend Oregon Outdoor Report

Activity: Mountain Bike Ride
Weather: 45ish partly cloudy
Trail conditions: Excellent
This is the first time this year I have ventured West to Phils Trail area this year. In my opinion, Horse Ridge is the best low altitude riding in Central Oregon by far, so I always wonder at why so many flock to Phils so early in the season. However, I decided to check it out anyway and here’s my report:
Trailhead completely jammed with cars. Par for the course. We rode to the chicken, then to CIA and Storm King, down Frazzle (formerly known as whoops, who made the decision to change the name of this trail?) and back to the trailhead. Trails are clear, dry, and firm all around with the exception of the upper trails around the Frazzle and Storm King junction. You’ll find some snow up here but nothing that can’t be ridden or quickly walked.
So…. other than the usual weekend crowds, the Phils network of trails is in excellent condition and rideable at least as far as the top of Frazzle.

I spent most of March in Colorado so there haven’t been any new blogs here in a while. Spring is here though and I plan on being very active on this site so stay tuned!

Trail conditions: Good
Horse Ridge got some snow with the latest storms but the snow is still cold and light, and up to the first fence is not over 1.5 inches deep. No mud or ice yet. Ridable to the fence, and I expect the snow gets deeper but is still rideable above that point. For runners, the snow covers the rocks and hides the ankle breakers, I would not advise running past the fenceline, and advise caution on the entire trail.

Finally! After a nearly 4 week dry spell we are getting some new snow. It snowed consistently all week and Bachelor was averaging around 4-5 inches a day. Alot of it is wind packed, but down in the trees is really quite good. The crowds showed up over the weekend, but fresh lines could still be had out past Northwest Express. Expect a great week of crowdless skiing as the storms continue to roll through. Snow is expected daily through next weekend.

Weather: 65 sunny
Trail conditions: Excellent
Global warming continues to keep the trails open and a week of dry weather and warm temps has resulted in all snow, ice, and mud drying up at the Ridge. Conditions are awesome.

Trail conditions: fair to good
All the snow and ice is gone but this weekends rain has left a little mud behind. Most of the trail below fenceline is dry and in good condition. Above fenceline expect varying amounts of mud. Rideable, but not good for running past fenceline. The Ridge dries out fast, so a few more warm dry days should improve conditions up high.

Conditions are pretty much like they were during last saturdays report. Ice and ruts are slightly better above the fence. Trail conditions good below fenceline, fair above.

The trail up to the first fence crossing is in very good shape - dry (frozen) with little ruts or ice. Above the fence is another story with frequent frozen rutty mud sections, and increasing ice as you ascend the ridge. Sand Canyon is poor with occasional frozen ruts and steep sections of ice. Stay below the first fence and the riding is very good.
